A 60-year-old church elder from ACK St. Luke Wang’uru Church in Kirinyaga County, who had been hospitalized for seven days following a bee attack at a funeral on December 10, has been discharged.
Simon Waweru was among the mourners who were attacked by a swarm of bees during the burial of Faith Murigu, a retired teacher, in Huduma, Mwea.
Speaking after his release from Mwea Mission Hospital on Wednesday, Waweru recalled the harrowing experience, saying he was unconscious when being rushed to the hospital.
“It took about five hours for me to realize where I was. I first saw my daughter crying and wondered where I was,” he said.
Waweru expressed shock at how dangerous and aggressive the bees were.
He explained that the attack occurred shortly before the burial began, just after the mourners had finished a church service.
“We had just come from the church service, and as we were preparing for the burial, the bees attacked us, causing chaos and forcing everyone to flee for cover,” he said.
While Waweru confirmed that he is now out of danger, several other mourners were also hospitalized following the attack but were discharged on the same day.
Waweru was the only one who remained in the hospital for treatment.
Despite the setback, the burial ceremony continued later that night after mourners lit tires to ward off the bees.
