Political activist Booker Omole recounted a harrowing experience from Saturday night, recalling how a quiet disturbance at his home escalated into a violent attack by armed assailants.
According to Omole, the commotion began around 3 a.m., but he initially dismissed it.
However, minutes later, he heard a scream unmistakably from a relative, Yvonne, prompting him to grab his firearm, which he keeps beside his bed.
As he approached the door, Omole noticed that attackers had already taken his relative hostage and were pushing them into his bedroom.
It was in that moment that, fearing for his life, he opened fire.
“They were dressed in police uniforms, except for the red mavins they wore. One of them held a flashlight in his left hand, trying to blind me,” Omole recalled.
In the ensuing chaos, he fired three shots two of which went into the air, while one struck one of the attackers.
The attackers, caught off guard by the gunfire, fled, leaving behind broken windows as evidence of the commotion.
Omole, a licensed firearm holder, has reported the incident to the Mlolongo Police Station, suspecting that the attack may have been linked to his outspoken activism, particularly his criticisms of governance in Kenya.
Just hours before the incident, Omole had participated in an online discussion about recent abductions, which may have made him a target.
“I have received terrifying phone calls, warning me to stop my activism. People have even made threats against me in general WhatsApp groups,” Omole explained, adding that his campaign for accountability has drawn opposition from powerful individuals.
Machakos Police Commander Patrick Lobolia confirmed that officers are investigating the attempted robbery, noting that two spent cartridges and one marvin were found at the scene.
Omole’s firearm has been taken for a ballistics examination as part of the investigation.
In a separate incident, the family of Steve Mbisi from Kibwezi West, Kinyambu, is urgently appealing to the government for the release of their son, who was allegedly abducted in Mlolongo on December 17, 2024.
Mbisi’s mother described the family’s distress over his disappearance, which has left his father hospitalized.
Mbisi vanished just one day after three of his friends went missing under similarly mysterious circumstances.
A month later, all four remain unaccounted for, despite widespread calls for their release.
