Police in Kiambu County have made significant progress in the investigation of a horrific rape and murder case involving a 62-year-old woman in Ruiru.
The victim was reportedly attacked by a lone assailant at approximately 4 AM while on her way to her farm.
Preliminary reports reveal that the attacker subjected the woman to brutal violence, using sharp objects, which resulted in severe bleeding.
In response, law enforcement officials revisited the crime scene alongside homicide detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to gather further evidence and leads.
Kiambu Police Commander Michael Muchiri emphasized that this follow-up underscores the government’s dedication to addressing issues related to rape, violence against women, and femicide.
“We are here to reassess the scene and demonstrate the gravity with which we are taking all incidents connected to violence against women,” stated Muchiri.
He elaborated on the conditions under which the victim encountered her attacker, noting that she was navigating a bushy area while crossing from the Matangi region toward Ruiru.
Tragically, despite being rescued by Good Samaritans and taken to the Ruiru Prison Dispensary before being transferred to Nairobi Women’s Hospital, the woman succumbed to her injuries during treatment.
This distressing event coincides with recent remarks from Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, who acknowledged the rising issue of femicide in the country.
He described it as a growing concern in the security landscape and highlighted the alarming trend of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV) affecting women, stating that a total of 7,107 cases have been reported since September 2023.
Mudavadi noted that between August and November 2024, there were 100 recorded murders of women, with a significant concentration in Nairobi. In contrast, Samburu and Mandera counties reported the lowest incidences of SGBV.
