First, Chris Waller began his career as a foreman for New Zealand trainer Paddy Busuttin in 1991. His first major success came when he trained Castletown, who went on to win the 1991 Melbourne Cup.

By 1994, he had taken out his own licence in Foxton, New Zealand, and began training a small team of horses.

His first winner came in 1995 with the horse Go Morgan at Trentham. Next, in 1997, he relocated to Sydney with just a few horses and set up at Rosehill.

In December 1998, he trained his first Sydney winner with Party Belle. Eventually in 2008, he won his first Group 1 success with Triple Honour in the Doncaster Handicap.

At the 2010/2011 racing season, he claimed his first Sydney trainers’ premiership, beginning a long era of dominance.
In 2013, he trained his first Cox Plate winner, Ocean Park.

By 2015, he had recorded 15 Group 1 wins in a single season, setting a new Australian record.

In 2019, he trained Nature Strip, who became one of the world’s best sprinters, winning multiple Group 1 races including The Everest and the King’s Stand Stakes at Royal Ascot in 2022.

In 2021, he added the Melbourne Cup to his achievements when Verry Elleegant triumphed in the 3200m handicap. She also won 11 Group 1 races across her career under his guidance.

He also trained star performers such as The Autumn Sun, with five Group 1 victories, and Kermadec, who won both the Doncaster and George Main Stakes.

He has consistently delivered victories in the Caulfield Cup, Golden Rose, Epsom Handicap, and Flight Stakes.
By 2023, he had surpassed 140 Group 1 wins, establishing himself as one of the greatest trainers in Australian racing history.

His runner Winx retired and became a global icon with 37 career wins from 43 starts, including 25 Group 1 victories  and a record-breaking 33 consecutive victories. Trained by Chris Waller and ridden by Hugh Bowman, the pair won four Cox Plates, three Queen Elizabeth Stakes and earned four Australian Horse of the Year titles.

In the 2024/25 season, he had seven Group 1 victories with Via Sistina. Presently, Chris Waller has a record of over  4500 career winners as of September 2025, including over 140 at Group 1 level.
