Court orders new mental test in KNH murder probe

The High Court sitting in Kibera ordered a fresh mental assessment for a patient accused of killing another patient at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).

Lady Justice Diana Kavedza directed that a psychiatrist from KNH be allowed access to the Nairobi Remand Prison to conduct a second evaluation of the accused, namely Kennedy Kalombotole.

Kalombotole, who had been admitted to KNH since December 1, 2024, is alleged to have murdered Edward Maingi Ndegwa, a fellow patient admitted to Ward 7B, Group C (Male) on July 11, 2025.

The court further instructed prison authorities to ensure that the accused continues receiving his diabetic treatment while in custody.

The results of the second mental assessment will help determine whether Kalombotole, who has been undergoing consistent treatment for various medical conditions, is fit to stand trial.

Justice Kavedza set the matter for mention on November 13, 2025, when the court will decide whether the accused should face a formal charge of murder.

Prosecution of the case is being led by Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Gikui Gichui, who informed the court that the assessment was necessary to ensure the suspect’s mental fitness before the commencement of trial proceedings.
