The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested three individuals believed to be behind a series of violent robberies that led to the deaths of four security guards in Gem, Yala Sub-County, Siaya County.
The suspects, identified as Albert Otieno, Farid Kimutai, and John Okumu, were apprehended following a month-long string of robberies and murders.
In a statement released on Saturday, February 1, 2025, the DCI confirmed the arrest of the trio, linking them to a spate of criminal activities between January 2, 2025, and January 29, 2025.
The suspects are accused of killing several security guards during the robberies and making off with valuable items.
“Three notorious suspects, Albert Otieno, Farid Kimutai, and John Okumu, linked to a series of robbery with violence incidents in Gem Yala Sub-County and surrounding areas, have finally been arrested,” the DCI said in the statement.
“The suspects are now in police custody and are undergoing processing as they await their court appearance.”
The DCI revealed that the suspects have been on a brutal crime spree, mercilessly killing security guards and stealing various items.
Their first known attack occurred on January 3, 2025, when they targeted a timber yard and hardware store near Ulumbi Junction along the Kisumu-Busia highway.
During this robbery, the trio killed 40-year-old watchman Jesse Kalasinga and made off with an assortment of hardware goods.
The investigation also uncovered a disturbing pattern of violence, with the suspects involved in multiple attacks throughout the month.
On January 20, the trio, along with other accomplices, vandalized a transformer at Nyang’oma Market, which caused a power outage in the area.
In the same incident, they killed 29-year-old security guard Absalom Sande and severely injured another guard, 42-year-old Francis Nyambese.
Following the attack, they stole a Dell laptop, three smartphones, and other valuables from a nearby shop.
The suspects’ reign of terror continued on January 29, 2025, at Yala Market, where they killed two more security guards, Jesse Otieno (35) and Edward Ochieng (40).
After the murders, the suspects looted a shop, stealing airtime scratch cards, smartphones, and other valuable merchandise.
The DCI has vowed to continue its efforts to bring all those responsible for the string of violent robberies to justice, assuring the public that the investigation is ongoing.
The arrests of Otieno, Kimutai, and Okumu are seen as a significant breakthrough in the case.
