In response to reports of expired maize and bean seeds, as well as fertilizers being sold in stores across Bungoma County and neighboring areas, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched a decisive operation.
Collaborating with the Kenya Plant Health and Inspectorate Service (KEPHIS), authorities are targeting those behind the illegal trade in these expired products, which pose a serious risk to farmers’ livelihoods.
The operation began in the Kanduyi division of Bungoma County, where a joint team from Bungoma Police Station and KEPHIS arrested Hillary Wafula and confiscated 124 bales of expired maize and bean seeds.
The crackdown expanded to Kakamega County, where three individuals John Kiniale, Mercy Merun, and Felix Oyath were arrested at Harambee Trading Centre.
The suspects led officers to three residential properties, where they discovered approximately 70 tons of maize, 10 tons of beans, and 50 bags of 50 kg fertilizer.
All the seized items were found to be expired and had been previously condemned for disposal.
The suspects are currently in custody at Bungoma Police Station, where they are being processed.
Investigations are ongoing to determine how these expired products found their way into the market.
This operation underscores a firm commitment to protecting farmers and sends a strong warning against the sale of unsafe agricultural products, ensuring that such practices will not be tolerated.
