Female Detective Wins Hearts After Rejecting Sh6.5 Million Bribe, Earns Promotion

In a powerful demonstration of integrity and courage, Detective Sergeant Ruth Nyambe of the Zambia Police Service has captured national admiration after refusing a massive bribe from a smuggling suspect, a decision that has now earned her a promotion and formal recognition for her exceptional ethics.

The dramatic incident unfolded on February 5, 2025, at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport in Lusaka, where Nyambe was on duty as part of a multi-agency operation that intercepted a passenger attempting to smuggle more than US$2 million in undeclared cash and suspected gold out of the country.

According to official statements from the Zambia Police Service Public Relations Unit, the suspect, a foreign national preparing to board a flight to Dubai first offered Detective Nyambe $5,000 (about Sh690,000) in hopes of securing his release.

When she refused, the man returned with an increased offer of $50,000 (roughly Sh6.5 million), a temptation that would sway many, but not Nyambe.

Undeterred, Detective Nyambe firmly rejected the bribe and immediately reported the incident to her superiors and the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), a critical move that ensured the crime was properly investigated and prosecuted rather than quietly buried.

Her exemplary conduct has been widely celebrated both within Zambia and throughout the region, especially in a context where corruption remains a persistent challenge in law enforcement and customs operations.

Transparency and accountability advocates have praised her actions, noting how rare such high-level resistance to bribery actually is in practice.

Promotion and Recognition

In response to her unwavering commitment to duty, the Inspector General of Police awarded Detective Sergeant Nyambe a promotion, a gesture widely welcomed by the public and civil society groups.

Officials also highlighted that her actions reinforce the importance of integrity and professionalism in the fight against transnational crime and corruption.

Police sources indicate that Nyambe was honored alongside another officer who similarly refused a separate bribe, underscoring a broader push within the Zambia Police Service to recognize ethical behaviour and discourage corrupt practices.

The Bigger Picture: Smuggling and Corruption Challenges

The smuggling incident at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport is part of a larger pattern of illicit cross-border activities that Zambian authorities have been battling.

In recent years, large sums of undeclared cash and suspected gold have repeatedly been intercepted at the airport, prompting stepped-up cooperation between customs, anti-smuggling units, and the Drug Enforcement Commission.

Zambia’s location as a key transit hub for Southern African trade and its significant mineral exports make it a target for sophisticated smuggling rings seeking to move currency and precious metals undetected.

Authorities warn that such crimes undermine economic stability and fuel corruption.

Despite these challenges, stories like that of Detective Nyambe serve as a reminder that individual courage and ethical leadership still exist within law enforcement ranks, and they also offer hope to citizens who yearn for accountability and transparency.
