Former volleyball star Janet Wanja, who passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2024, after battling cancer, will be laid to rest on Friday, January 3, at Lang’ata Cemetery.
The Malkia Strikers legend’s family has outlined a series of events to honor her life and legacy.
The funeral proceedings will begin on Tuesday, December 31, with a candle-lighting vigil at 7:00 pm at Wanja’s residence at Vikam B Centre, Clay City, Kasarani.
A requiem mass will then be held on Thursday, January 2, from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani Indoor Arena.
After the mass, Wanja’s body will be returned to Montezuma Monalisa Funeral Home on Mbagathi Road for an overnight stay.
The burial on Friday will be a private ceremony, with attendance limited to family, close friends, and select dignitaries.
The funeral arrangements have been confirmed by the funeral committee, chaired by Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) President Charles Nyaberi.
The committee also includes representatives from the National Olympic Committee of Kenya, the National Sports Council, the government, and former national team players such as Roseline Odhiambo.
Earlier plans for a funeral service at Lang’ata High School have been canceled, with the memorial at Kasarani Indoor Arena set to be the sole public event before the burial.
A final meeting of the funeral committee will be held on Monday at Sports View Hotel in Nairobi to finalize the remaining details.
Wanja passed away while receiving treatment at MP Shah hospital in Nairobi. She had fallen ill in August, shortly after returning from the Paris Olympics, where she had served as the Malkia Strikers’ fitness trainer.
President William Ruto has expressed condolences to Wanja’s family, remembering her as a disciplined and talented athlete who dedicated herself to the service of Kenya’s sports community.
“Janet Wanja, a gifted and disciplined volleyball star, served the cause of our country’s sports with honor and dedication.
She was focused, hardworking, and a team player,” said President Ruto, offering prayers and comfort to her loved ones.
