How to remove a tag on TikTok

TikTok has grown into a global platform where users share videos, tag friends, and engage with content. However, sometimes you might get tagged in a video or comment that you don’t want to be associated with. Luckily, TikTok allows you to manage and remove tags. Here’s a detailed guide on how to remove a tag on TikTok.

Step 1: Understand TikTok Tags

On TikTok, tags can appear in a few ways:

  1. Mentions in Captions or Comments – Another user adds your username using the “@” symbol.
  2. Tags in Videos – Friends or other users tag you in their video posts.
  3. Tagged in Duets or Stitch Videos – Users may include your account in collaborative content.

Knowing where the tag is helps you decide the best removal method.

Step 2: Remove Mentions in Comments

If you are tagged in a comment or reply and want it removed:

  1. Open TikTok and go to the video where you were mentioned.
  2. Locate your tag in the comments section.
  3. If it’s your comment or reply, tap Delete to remove it.

Currently, TikTok does not allow you to remove someone else’s mention in their comment, but you can manage visibility using privacy settings.

Step 3: Remove a Tag from a Video You’re Tagged In

If someone tags you in a video and you want it removed:

  1. Open TikTok and go to your Notifications (tap the Inbox icon).
  2. Find the notification showing you were tagged in a video.
  3. Tap the video to open it.
  4. Tap the three dots (…) on the right-hand side of the video.
  5. Select Privacy Options or Remove Tag (if available).

If the “Remove Tag” option is not visible, TikTok may require you to request the uploader to remove the tag manually.

Step 4: Adjust Privacy Settings to Control Tags

You can prevent future tags by updating your privacy settings:

  1. Open TikTok and tap Profile → Menu (three lines) → Settings and Privacy.
  2. Select Privacy → Tags.
  3. Choose from the following options:
    • Everyone – anyone can tag you.
    • Friends – only people you follow can tag you.
    • No One – prevents all tags on your account.

This ensures you have more control over who can mention or tag you in the future.

Step 5: Report or Block Unwanted Tags

If someone repeatedly tags you inappropriately:

  1. Open the video or comment where you are tagged.
  2. Tap the Share icon → Report.
  3. Select the reason for reporting (e.g., harassment, spam).

You can also block the user to prevent further tagging.

Tips to Manage Tags Effectively

  • Regularly check your notifications to monitor new tags.
  • Use TikTok’s Privacy → Mentions & Tags to automatically filter unwanted tags.
  • If you’re tagged in content you don’t want to be seen on your profile, make sure to hide videos from your profile by adjusting visibility settings.
