How to Unsend Messages on TikTok

TikTok has evolved beyond just a video-sharing platform. Its messaging feature allows users to connect, chat, and share content privately. However, just like any messaging app, there may be times when you want to unsend a message — whether it was sent by mistake, contains an error, or you’ve simply changed your mind. Fortunately, TikTok now offers an option to delete messages from both sides of the chat.

Can You Unsend Messages on TikTok?

Yes. TikTok allows users to unsend direct messages in one-on-one chats. This means you can delete a message not just from your screen, but also from the recipient’s view. However, there’s a catch — this feature is only available for a limited time after the message is sent, and it must be done before the recipient sees or interacts with it.

Steps to Unsend a Message on TikTok

To unsend a message, start by opening the TikTok app and navigating to your inbox by tapping the message icon at the bottom of the screen. Choose the chat where the message was sent.

Find the specific message you want to delete. Press and hold on the message until a menu pops up with several options. Tap “Delete.” A confirmation prompt may appear asking if you want to delete the message for both sides. Confirm your action by tapping “Delete for Everyone.”

If this option is available and you act quickly, the message will be removed from the conversation entirely, and the recipient won’t be able to see it.

Limitations of the Unsend Feature

While the feature is helpful, it has some limitations. If the recipient has already seen the message before you delete it, the unsend function won’t erase the memory of it. Also, in some cases, depending on TikTok’s latest updates, you may only be able to delete messages from your side — meaning the recipient will still have a copy of it.

Additionally, you cannot delete entire conversations from the other person’s device. Deleting a chat from your inbox only removes it on your end, not theirs.

Alternative Options If Unsend Isn’t Available

If you can’t unsend a message or if it’s already been seen, consider clarifying or correcting the message by sending a follow-up. If you’ve sent something inappropriate or sensitive by mistake, apologizing and explaining the situation quickly can help avoid misunderstandings.

For cases of harassment or inappropriate messages, TikTok offers reporting tools within the chat. You can also block users to prevent further communication.
