Kasipul MP Murder Suspect Phillip Aroko Released On Sh 300,000 Cash Bail

Phillip Aroko, a businessman and key suspect in the ongoing investigation into the murder of Kasipul MP Charles Were, has been released on a cash bail of Sh 300,000 by the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) Law Courts.

Delivering the ruling, Principal Magistrate Irene Gichobi imposed strict bail conditions.

Aroko has been ordered to surrender his passport and is barred from travelling to Homa Bay County, the home of the late MP.

He is also prohibited from contacting the family of the deceased, co-suspects, or any individuals linked to the case.

The magistrate further warned Aroko against interfering with evidence, emphasizing the sensitivity of the ongoing probe.

As part of his bail terms, Aroko must report regularly to investigating officers and remain available to provide any necessary information or materials to assist the investigation.

The prosecution had objected to his release, citing the high public interest surrounding the case and emphasizing the need to detain him for seven more days to finalize critical inquiries into his possible involvement.

“We acknowledge his cooperation, but this case concerns the murder of an elected leader.

The magnitude of the matter demands further scrutiny before a decision is made on whether to charge or release him,” the prosecution told the court.

Aroko is one of 11 suspects currently under investigation in connection with the high-profile killing of MP Charles Were.

The MP’s death sent shockwaves through the political landscape, prompting a nationwide outcry for justice and transparency.

The case will be mentioned again on June 3, 2025, as investigations continue.
