A 40-year-old man was shot and killed in a confrontation with police in Karatina, Nyeri County. Police said George Gathu Matheri was shot fatally in unclear circumstances on Sunday night near Rubis petrol station.
Two police officers attached to the Mathira East Sub County were on patrol within Rubis petrol station within Karatina town when a confrontation ensued between them and the deceased.
They claimed the deceased tried to grab an AK47 rifle from one of the officers.
In the process, the weapon discharged four bullets fatally injuring the deceased with two rounds one in the head and the other in the chest.
This prompted a protest in the area for hours with locals demanding justice.
During the incident the members of the public barricaded the Nairobi -Karatina highway using debris and burning tyres.
One of the police officers had his right hand ring finger injured as he tried to settle the commot
ion between the officer and deceased. Two cars were damaged in the chaos.
The body was moved for the mortuary pending an autopsy as the AK 47 rifle involved in the shooting was recovered with 16 rounds in the magazine and kept in the armoury as an exhibit.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority said they are investigating the incident.
IPOA said they had launched investigations following the shooting.
IPOA chairperson Ahmed Issack Hassan said his officers were dispatched to the scene and collected crucial evidence for forensic and ballistic analysis.
After conducting preliminary investigations, IPOA arrested the officer suspected of having shot Matheri amid the ongoing probe.
The Authority called on eyewitnesses to provide relevant information that may assist in the probe. The police termed the incident isolated.
