Two brothers are at the center of the investigation into the murder of Wells Fargo HR manager Willis Onyango, with one brother, George Oduor Okoth, killed in a confrontation with police.
The other brother, Victor Okoth Ouma, remains in custody.
Police confirmed that George Oduor, the elder sibling, had allegedly introduced Victor to a life of crime. Both were known boxers in their community.
Oduor was fatally shot by police during an operation in Kisumu on Thursday, where he was discovered hiding in a guest house near the Kisumu National Polytechnic.
During the encounter, he reportedly drew a firearm, prompting a shootout that ended in his death.
Nyanza Regional Police Commander Patrick Tito stated that a Smith & Wesson pistol with three live rounds was recovered from Oduor.
He was previously on the run after leaving behind a rolling vehicle and a seriously injured female passenger, who later died.
“The team was tracking him and managed to locate him at a guest house. He resisted and opened fire, forcing our officers to respond,” Tito explained.
The incident occurred around midday on October 31.
With Oduor’s death, the number of suspects killed in this case has risen to two, as police continue to search for at least two additional individuals involved in the murder of another victim, Ayieko.
According to police reports, Oduor and his gang abducted Ayieko, holding him captive for several days while demanding ransom.
He suffered severe injuries from being struck against a wall during this time.
As part of the investigation, police have interrogated the owner of the house where Ayieko was held.
Another suspect, a woman injured during a police shootout in Gem, succumbed to her injuries in a hospital on Wednesday.
She was part of a group that attempted to flee from police during a chase.
Officers in Siaya’s Gem Wagai sub-county recovered Ayieko’s stolen firearm following a tip-off about two individuals with a gun in a vehicle.
When police attempted to stop the car, the driver opened fire and fled, leading to a high-speed chase that ended in a crash.
The driver escaped, but the female passenger was left behind and later died.
The search for the remaining suspects led detectives to Oduor’s rented home, where they found clothing and electronics believed to be stolen from Ayieko.
Director of Criminal Investigations Mohamed Amin reported that they are focused on a gang of six to seven individuals, but the motive for Ayieko’s murder remains unclear.
In custody, Ouma has been linked to the crime through forensic evidence and financial transactions made using Ayieko’s mobile phone.
An autopsy revealed that Ayieko died from blunt force trauma to the head. He was reported missing after attending a burial in Siaya, and his body was discovered in Mungowere stream on October 23, after his family reported him missing on October 21.
His car was later found abandoned in Kakamega County.
