A man infamous for causing accidents and robbing motorists along the Southern Bypass in Nairobi has been apprehended.
Martin Otieno, a notorious suspect, was arrested following a coordinated effort by officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Lang’ata and DCI Dagoretti.
The arrest took place just after the New Year, as Otieno attempted to carry out his usual crime spree on the busy bypass.
According to the DCI, the suspect’s modus operandi involved placing large stones on the road to cause accidents, and once the vehicles crashed, he would target the victims for robbery.
“Following numerous complaints from motorists about a series of robberies along the Southern Bypass, a strategic operation was launched by the Regional Criminal Investigations Officer,” the DCI statement read.
“This collaborative effort resulted in the swift arrest of Martin Otieno, who was caught red-handed attempting to rob a family after orchestrating an accident on the bypass.”
The incident occurred when Otieno placed a large stone on the road, causing a Volkswagen vehicle to crash.
Officers on patrol, who were alerted by the loud crash, quickly responded to the scene.
As they arrived, they found that Otieno had already rushed to the vehicle, intending to rob the occupants.
“He emerged from the nearby bush after the crash and immediately confronted the family in the vehicle, demanding their valuables,” the statement continued.
“The officers quickly pursued him, and he was arrested shortly after attempting to flee.”
The suspect, who will be processed for arraignment on January 6, 2025, is now in police custody.
This arrest comes as part of ongoing efforts by the DCI to curb rising criminal activities along the Southern Bypass, ensuring the safety of motorists using the route.
