The National Police Service (NPS) has issued a clarification regarding the discovery of the body of Justus Mutumwa, one of the three men reported missing from Mlolongo.
His body was found on Thursday, January 31, at the City Mortuary, more than a month after he and two others disappeared in December 2024.
Mutumwa, along with Martin Mwau and Karani Muema, was reported missing on December 16, 2024, sparking concern and extensive search efforts by their families.
The bodies of both Mutumwa and Mwau were discovered at the City Mortuary, with their families unaware of their whereabouts for over a month.
However, in a statement released on Thursday, NPS clarified that some reports circulating in the media regarding the circumstances of Mutumwa’s body discovery were inaccurate.
According to the police, the body was initially identified in connection with a separate case.
On December 18, 2024, a body was discovered floating along the Nairobi River in the Ruai area by a woman who was irrigating her vegetables.
The condition of the body, including visible bruises, led the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch a murder investigation.
At the time, Mutumwa’s family was unaware of this development.
They had reported him missing on December 21, 2024, at the Athi River Police Station, stating that he had been last seen on December 17.
The body remained unidentified until forensic investigations on Thursday confirmed that it belonged to the missing Justus Mutumwa.

“The facts surrounding the tragic discovery of Justus Mutumwa’s body have been misunderstood and misreported,” said the NPS in its statement.
“The body found in Ruai was linked to a separate investigation, and it was only after forensic analysis that it was confirmed to be that of Mutumwa.”
The NPS also reiterated its commitment to thoroughly investigating all cases of missing persons and encouraged the public to share any relevant information via toll-free numbers, such as 999, 911, 112, or the FichuakwaDCI line at 0800 766 203.
Meanwhile, the body of Martin Mwau is still under investigation, and details of where it was recovered before being taken to the City Mortuary remain unclear.
The discovery of these bodies has raised serious concerns about the circumstances surrounding the trio’s disappearance and deaths.
The three men were last seen by friends at a local establishment on the evening of December 15, 2024, appearing to be in high spirits.
According to their families, the men had left their homes the following morning to attend to their work and business but never returned.
With the discovery of Justus Mutumwa’s remains, only Karani Muema remains unaccounted for, leaving the families anxiously awaiting answers about the fate of their loved ones.
DCI is actively pursuing the investigation to unravel the mystery surrounding the disappearance and deaths of the three men.
