Police in Murang’a County have confirmed the tragic deaths of four children in a fire that broke out in a house in Nginda location.
According to a police OB report Indicate that the incident occurred on the night of Thursday, December 19, and was reported at the Maragua Police Station.
The report states that a fire had engulfed a house at Gakoigo Sublocation, Nginda, and upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered that the fire had consumed a room rented by a woman named Lucy Njeri.
Njeri had left her four children locked inside the room while she went to the market.
“Police officers from Maragua and the DCI Murang’a South responded to the incident and found that the iron-sheet room rented by Lucy Njeri had caught fire while she was away, leaving four children inside,” the report stated.
Unfortunately, the children were all burned beyond recognition.
The bodies of the victims were transferred to Murang’a Level Five Hospital morgue, where autopsies are awaited.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire, and the value of the property destroyed has yet to be determined.
Witnesses to the scene recounted that the fire completely destroyed the house while the children were likely asleep.
Neighbors were the first to notice the smoke and rushed to investigate, but by the time they attempted to intervene, the flames had spread quickly, making it impossible to save the children.
Despite the efforts of locals to extinguish the fire, which took several hours, the children had already perished.
It is reported that the deceased children included two boys and two girls, with three of them being related.
This tragic incident follows another similar case two weeks ago in Moburo, Kericho County, where three children lost their lives in a house fire.
The ongoing investigation by DCI Murang’a South is focused on determining the fire’s origin.
