President William Ruto has praised the late Former US President Jimmy Carter, describing him as “an extraordinary leader whose dedication to public service was epic.”
Ruto lauded Carter as a passionate advocate for global peace and human rights, acknowledging his pivotal role in promoting these causes throughout his life.
Carter, who brokered peace between Israel and Egypt during his presidency and was later awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian efforts, passed away at the age of 100.
His son, Chip Carter, confirmed that the former president died at his home in Georgia on Sunday.
Serving as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, Carter was a former peanut farmer who dedicated the remainder of his life to charity and humanitarian work.
He spent his final years in Plains, Georgia.
His wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, who passed away on November 19, 2023, at the age of 96, had been by his side.
Carter holds the distinction of being the longest-living former US president.
In his tribute, Ruto emphasized Carter’s significant contributions to environmental preservation and combating climate change, stating, “The world is indebted to his pioneering voice for a healthy planet.”
Ruto also expressed his condolences, saying, “Our thoughts and prayers are with President Carter’s family and the people of the United States of America. Rest In Peace.”
Other world leaders have also mourned his passing. US President Joe Biden called Carter an “extraordinary leader, statesman, and humanitarian,” emphasizing that millions across the globe regarded him as a dear friend despite never having met him.
US President-elect Donald Trump praised Carter’s efforts during a pivotal time for the country, saying, “The challenges Jimmy faced as President came at a pivotal time for our country and he did everything in his power to improve the lives of all Americans. For that, we all owe him a debt of gratitude.”
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi also paid tribute, highlighting Carter’s critical role in the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel.
He said Carter’s legacy “will remain etched in the annals of history” as one of the world’s most prominent leaders in service to humanity.
