Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo and Mt Kenya University were celebrated as the top honorees at the 2024 ICT Value Awards, which took place on Tuesday night at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) in Nairobi.
This prestigious event highlights innovation, excellence, and leadership in the ICT and digital media sectors, showcasing significant contributions to technology and digital transformation in Kenya.
Raymond Omollo was honored for his exceptional leadership in advancing digital transformation efforts within the public sector.
He received the award for Best National Vision on ICT, recognizing his crucial role in digitizing the National Government Administrative Officers (NGAO) system and the Police Occurrence Book (OB), which have streamlined crime reporting and enhanced public safety.
Mt Kenya University earned accolades for the Best Use of ICT in Education.
During the event, Dennis Itumbi, the Head of the President’s Special Projects and Creative Economy Coordination, urged innovators to develop fact-checking tools to counter misinformation and fake news.
“We must rise to the occasion and ensure that we use innovation to combat fake news, as it poses a significant threat to our democracy,” Itumbi remarked while congratulating the award recipients.
Adrian Kamotho, Secretary General of the ICT Value Awards, stressed the need for increased private sector investment in recognizing excellence in the ICT field to boost morale among innovators and ignite a talent revolution.
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja was named the Digital Excellence Champion of the Year.
The Open University, hailed as Kenya’s first fully digital university, emerged as a major winner, securing multiple awards for its transformative contributions to higher education.
The institution’s use of cutting-edge technology has significantly improved access to quality education, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Elijah Omwenga received the Distinguished Scholar Award for his outstanding leadership in academia.
Other notable winners included KICC, which secured three awards, with Digital Communication Manager David Gitari being recognized as the Digital Communication Practitioner of the Year.
TV47 was awarded for Best Use of ICT in Media, while SPM Buzz was named the Best Digital Media House.
The Athi Water Works Development Agency was recognized for Best Use of ICT in Parastatals.
In the devolved government category, Nairobi and Nakuru Counties were honored for their innovative ICT strategies.
Additional awards were presented to the ICT Authority, Fanikisha Micro Finance, Ushers Kenya, Sidian Bank, Kenya Film Classification Board (KFCB), and Solventa Enterprises for their remarkable contributions to ICT innovation across various sectors.
The 2024 ICT Value Awards showcased a record number of nominees, underscoring the growing influence of technology in shaping Kenya’s future.
The event brought together key stakeholders from government, academia, and industry, reinforcing the significance of ICT as a vital pillar of national development.
