The Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development, and Special Programs, Geoffrey Ruku, on Saturday led senior government officials in a colourful goat auction at Ishiara Market, an event aimed at uplifting the local economy of Mbeere North.
The CS termed the lively auction, which drew large crowds, as part of the Kenya Kwanza’s Government bottom-up economic transformation agenda, designed to empower small-scale traders and livestock farmers by promoting local trade and ensuring that wealth circulates within rural communities.
CS Ruku emphasized that the initiative was not a one-time event but part of a broader government plan to revitalize rural markets and create sustainable income opportunities for ordinary citizens.
“We are here to walk the talk of our campaign promise, to empower hustlers from the grassroots,” he said to the cheering crowd.
Ruku assured residents that President William Ruto’s administration remains committed to ensuring equitable distribution of National resources.
“This is your Government, and we are here to make sure you enjoy the fruits of your support,” he added.
The CS revealed that similar auctions and empowerment programs will soon be rolled out across other markets in Embu County, targeting local farmers, women, and youth.
While addressing traders and residents, Ruku urged the community to remain steadfast in supporting the government and the UDA candidate for the upcoming Mbeere North by-election, Leonard Muthende, describing him as a dependable leader who understands local challenges.
“The people of Mbeere North must stay in Government to continue reaping the benefits of development and empowerment programs. The ‘Wamunyoro’ narrative is mere rhetoric that cannot be depended on,” he said.
Ruku further noted that President Ruto’s administration had already demonstrated goodwill by channeling key projects and resources into the region. He urged locals to shun divisive politics and focus on unity and development.
“Let us focus on development, unity, and economic growth, not empty slogans,” he stated.
The high-profile event was attended by nine Principal Secretaries, Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, Members of Parliament, and several Members of County Assembly (MCAs) from the region.
Governor Mbarire lauded the initiative, saying it showcased the Government’s commitment to empowering small traders and livestock farmers.
“This is a clear testament that the Kenya Kwanza government is serious about supporting the grassroots economy. I urge our people to seize such opportunities to grow their businesses and improve their livelihoods,” she said.
Many traders expressed joy and gratitude, noting that the auction provided them a rare opportunity to sell their livestock at better prices.
“We are happy with our leaders for organizing this goat auction. We have greatly benefited from selling our livestock,” said Njagi Kiura, a local resident.
The leaders noted that the event also strengthened the bond between the Government and local communities, signaling renewed efforts to make the bottom-up agenda a reality in Mbeere North.
