President William Ruto departed for Juba, South Sudan, on Wednesday for an official visit intended to strengthen the political transition in South Sudan through the Tumaini Peace Initiative.
This visit follows President Salva Kiir’s recent journey to Nairobi on August 27, 2024, where he participated in the inauguration of Kenya’s candidacy for the African Union Commission.
During that occasion, both leaders reiterated their dedication to mutual growth, regional collaboration, and sustainable development.
The Tumaini initiative, introduced by Kiir and endorsed by Kenya along with various development partners, serves as a forward-thinking model for inclusive peace-building.
Over the past six months, this initiative has progressed through extensive discussions with key stakeholders in South Sudan, laying the groundwork for enduring peace in the region.
The agenda will also encompass strategic regional infrastructure projects, including the LAPSSET Corridor, as stated by the State House.
This transformative initiative aims to enhance trade by ensuring seamless connectivity between South Sudan and the Indian Ocean.
The completion of vital road links between the two nations is anticipated to improve connectivity, lower costs, and invigorate local economies, in line with the vision of a prosperous and interconnected East Africa.
Ruto and Kiir will further engage in discussions concerning matters related to the African Union.
During the launch of Kenya’s candidacy for the African Union Commission Chairmanship on August 27, Kiir expressed his support for Kenya’s candidate, highlighting the cooperative relationship between Kenya and South Sudan within the African Union framework.
