President William Ruto on January 1 issued a stern warning to contractors delaying the implementation of key government projects.
He said the government is committed to fulfilling its promises to the people, saying contractors undermining their efforts will not be tolerated.
“There are many contractors who are letting us down, and we will not allow them. This is the year for delivering our agenda as planned,” he said.
He made the remarks in Kisii, where he inspected the construction of the Kisii Cancer Centre.
He had spent his night in at Kisii State Lodge before he drove to the site.
He expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of the project.
Ruto instructed the contractor to implement the project in line with the agreement or face contract termination.
“You have been paid all the money required. There is no reason whatsoever why this project is not progressing,” he said
The project, launched in August last year at the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital has faced delays, drawing the president’s ire.
Ruto, visibly dissatisfied with the construction progress, criticised the contractor for poor performance.
“You will get a final warning. If you don’t pull up your socks, I am sorry, we will have to terminate this contract and get another contractor so that we can get this cancer centre running,” said Ruto.
He emphasised that his administration would not tolerate delays, especially when all financial obligations had been met.
“I will not allow this kind of thing to continue because you have been paid all the money required.
There are no pending certificates, and there is no reason whatsoever for this project not to be complete,” he added.
The Kisii Cancer Centre is estimated to cost $22.8 million (Sh2.9 billion), with funding sourced from the Kenya Government ($2.8 million), the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa ($10 million), and the Saudi Fund for Development ($10 million).
Earlier, Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto hosted a section of Kisii residents and leaders at the Kisii State Lodge for the State New Year’s Eve Dinner, where they welcomed 2025 together.
