A small aircraft carrying 10 people crashed into shops in the heart of Gramado, a popular tourist city in southern Brazil, on Sunday, according to civil defense officials.
Early reports suggest there were no survivors from the crash.
“Sadly, initial information indicates that none of the occupants of the aircraft survived,” said Governor Eduardo Leite in a statement on social media.
The public security office of Rio Grande do Sul state reported that at least 15 people were taken to a local hospital, with most suffering from smoke inhalation due to the fire that broke out following the crash.
The plane is said to have first hit the chimney of a building before striking the second floor of a house and finally crashing into a furniture store.
Debris from the crash also reached a nearby inn, authorities confirmed.
Gramado, located in a mountainous area, is the top tourist destination in Rio Grande do Sul and was already recovering from devastating floods earlier this year, which claimed many lives, destroyed infrastructure, and caused significant economic disruption.
The crash occurred just days before the Christmas holiday, a peak season for the city, which is known for its festive decorations and events.
