Tension Erupts In Juja Over Factory Construction Amid Health Concerns

Tension arose in Juja, Kiambu County over the construction of a factory in a residential area as locals are up in arms over the move claiming that it puts their health in danger.

The plant which is expected to produce soap and toilet paper has Kahuna Industries as its owner and has been built at a location along Kenyatta Road, next to the Thika main road which has infuriated the local residents.

During the public consultation forum he organized, the Deputy County Commissioner, Mr. Daniel Ndege was confronted with opposition from the community regarding the project and at the same time they begged him to relocate the factory to an industrial area due to the health risks posed by the smoke and smell.

On the other hand, some of the participants at the meeting were against the opposition to the factory saying that the development would reduce the unemployment levels for the locals.

The tension arising from the conflicting sides who had different sentiments towards the factory resulted in problems for Mr. Ndege and Godfrey Mucheke, the Kalimoni Ward MCA, during the meeting.

Although the management of the company attempted to reassure the residents by saying that the factory would not be dangerous because measures to control noise and dust were implemented, the residents, however, remained disgruntled.

One of the local leaders said that they did not accept the invitation from one of the company’s directors who wanted to talk about the matter because they thought it was inappropriate.
