TRAFFIC ALERT: Road Closures And Diversions Announced Ahead Of CHAN Tournament In Nairobi


The Officer Commanding Traffic in Nairobi County, CP Joseph Chirchir, has issued a comprehensive traffic advisory ahead of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) tournament scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 3, 2025.

To ensure smooth traffic flow and enhanced security during the continental sporting event, several key roads in the city will be temporarily closed while alternative routes and diversions will be in effect for both private and public transport.

Road Closures (Effective from early morning August 3, 2025):

  1. Aerodrome Road – Closed from Madaraka Roundabout up to Bunyala Roundabout.
  2. Langata Road – Closed from Madaraka Roundabout to Lusaka Roundabout (one lane only).
  3. Mombasa Road – Closed from Lusaka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout (one lane only).

Diversions and Alternative Routes:

  • Motorists from Mombasa Road heading to the CBD are advised to use Likoni Road, Enterprise Road via General Motors, or divert through the Southern Bypass at Ole Sereni.
  • Motorists on Langata Road aiming for the CBD should use Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.
  • Motorists from Nairobi CBD heading towards Thika Road, Ruiru, Juja, or Thika should consider using either Limuru Road or Kiambu Road.
  • Matatus ferrying passengers to Kasarani Stadium for the CHAN matches should use Ruaraka Baba Dogo Road, Ngomongo Road, and proceed to Ngomongo Roundabout.
  • Motorists from Thika Road are encouraged to use Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road to avoid congestion.

CP Chirchir urged all motorists and commuters to plan their journeys early, follow traffic marshals’ directions, and remain patient as the city hosts an important sporting event expected to draw thousands of local and international fans.

“We are working closely with event organizers and security teams to ensure a seamless experience for both residents and visitors. We urge all road users to adhere to the guidelines to avoid inconvenience,” CP Chirchir stated.

Traffic police officers will be stationed across major junctions to manage the flow and offer guidance throughout the day.
