Police in Nairobi on Tuesday, November 19, fatally shot a robbery suspect, Ian Omondi, alias Iano, during a gunfight in Njiru Sub-County along Kangundo Road.
Omondi, who had been on law enforcement’s radar for a series of criminal activities, was linked to multiple robbery incidents and was reportedly the mastermind behind recent motorbike thefts in the area.
According to Jessy Munene, a local boda boda rider, several motorbikes had disappeared in recent weeks, with some recovered while others remain untraced.
“Many of us have lost our motorbikes here. Some have been found, but others are still missing,” Munene said.
CCTV footage captured Omondi pursuing the Bodaboda Association chairman at the KCC stage in Mowlem, allegedly seeking revenge after being subjected to a mob beating.
Eyewitnesses reported that Omondi had been caught red-handed during a previous theft and was assaulted by an angry crowd.
However, he was rescued and treated at a hospital.
“After his discharge, he embarked on a revenge mission, targeting those he believed orchestrated the beating,” an eyewitness revealed.
The suspect’s criminal record extended beyond Njiru to other areas, including Kayole, Buruburu, and Ruai.
During the operation, police also arrested Omondi’s wife, Stella Nyambura, to assist with ongoing investigations.
Omondi’s body was transported to the mortuary, pending a postmortem examination.
The incident underscores continued efforts by law enforcement to crack down on rising cases of robbery with violence in Nairobi and surrounding areas.
