Two individuals posing as senior Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) officials were arrested in Bungoma on Monday, January 2025.
EACC CEO Abdi Mohamud confirmed that the suspects had been conning public officials and members of the public, claiming they could terminate ongoing corruption investigations in exchange for bribes.
The suspects, identified as Tobia Singila Wekesa, 23, and Sharon Nanjala Anyango, 26, presented themselves as high-ranking EACC officials to extort money.
Wekesa allegedly posed as the EACC Director in charge of a non-existent Kakamega office, while Anyango claimed to be a senior EACC Director based in Nairobi.
Investigations revealed that Wekesa is a third-year student at Kibabii University, while Anyango claims to have graduated from the same institution in 2024.
According to Mohamud, the suspects were apprehended at an NG-CDF office in Bungoma, where they had posed as investigators inspecting CDF projects.
“They demanded a bribe of Sh150,000 from the complainants, promising to drop the investigation and forgive them,” he said.
The complainants promptly reported the incident to the EACC, leading to the suspects’ arrest. The pair are currently being held at the EACC Western Regional Offices in Bungoma, where they have recorded statements.
The EACC has urged the public to remain vigilant and report suspected impostors by calling the toll-free hotline 1551 or emailing report@integrity.go.ke.
Those who the suspects may have defrauded are advised to visit the nearest EACC offices to file complaints.
