Video of Al-Shabaab attack on Lamu military camp emerges

A video has emerged of the  fierce gun battle between Al-Shabaab militants and Kenya Defence Forces soldiers during the botched attack at a military camp in Lamu.

The video was filmed by British Jihadist Thomas Evans, 25, who was part of the militants who had attacked the camp. He was killed in the ensuing gun battle along with 10 other militants.

In the video, the militants are seen sneaking into the military camp early morning before they were met by a barrage of heavy gunfire. They are estimated to have been 30 in number.

The video was first aired by ITV News of Britain and later shared by major news outlets around the world including CNN.

Nairobi News could not independently verify the authenticity of the video.

The story aired by ITV News also contained footage showing Mr Evans together with the other Al-Shabaab militants as they openly embraced and shouted chants in a forest on the eve of the attack.

Also captured in the footage are improvised rockets and explosives that were to be used by the militants in the attack, as well as a model of the targeted KDF camp in Lamu.

Wakenya wanalia kama watoto wadogo(Kenyans cry like babies),” the commander of the militants is heard telling his charges in the video.

A day after the thwarted attack, KDF spokesman Col David Obonyo confirmed that one of the killed attackers was Thomas Evans.

Mr Evans is also believed to be part of the militants who attacked the coastal town of Mpeketoni in Lamu county last year in which 70 people were killed.
