Detectives are investigating the murder of 19-year-old Sharon Atieno, also known as Nicole, whose body was discovered in a banana plantation in Kiambaa, Kiambu County, on Friday, November 8, 2024. Sharon was reported missing hours after leaving her home for a walk late the previous night.
According to friends and family, Sharon left her residence in Thindigwa, Karuri, at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, November 7, 2024, to make a phone call and take a stroll, leaving her roommate behind.
When her friends attempted to contact her later that night, they were unable to reach her.
Her body was found the next day in a banana farm in Gachorwe village, Kiambaa, with signs of severe mutilation.
At this stage, police have not disclosed the motive behind the murder.
Kiambaa Subcounty Police Commander Pius Mwathi confirmed that no arrests have been made yet.
“Detectives are on the ground following leads, and we are hopeful that arrests will be made soon,” he said.
An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, November 13, 2024, to determine the exact cause of death and provide further insight into the investigation.
Meanwhile, in Baringo County, police are also probing another suspected murder.
The body of 28-year-old Gladys Jemuge was found in a thicket in Kuriondonin village, Kewamoi Sublocation, covered with a piece of clothing.
Authorities reported visible injuries on her head, bruising on her lower abdomen, and blood coming from her mouth, nose, and right eye.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Gladys’s death, and her body has been transferred to the Baringo County Referral Hospital for a postmortem.
This brings the number of women found dead under suspicious circumstances in recent weeks to over 100, although authorities stress that there is no evidence of a targeted campaign against women.
Police maintain that all murder cases are being thoroughly investigated, regardless of gender, and that such incidents are typically the result of individual motives or spur-of-the-moment actions.
Detectives continue to call for vigilance in the face of these ongoing investigations.
