Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has strongly dismissed claims surrounding the alleged abduction of former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju, warning that the government will take firm action against individuals staging “self-abductions.”
Speaking on the matter, Murkomen emphasized that Kenya operates under the rule of law and that security agencies only pursue criminal elements.
“We are a government of the rule of law. We only deal with criminals, and I have to say this expressly,” he stated.
The CS criticized what he termed as attempts to incite the public through false claims of abduction, cautioning that such actions could trigger unrest in the country.
“Somebody cannot incite the public and cause unrest in this country in the name of abduction, yet the facts are different,” Murkomen said.
He further called on the Judiciary to take a firm stance against individuals found to be fabricating abduction claims for personal or political gain.
“Theatrics must come to a stop. I want to ask the Judiciary to become very vigilant. If we bring people who are abducting themselves before a court of law, you must take the severest action against them,” he added.
Murkomen warned that failure to act decisively could set a dangerous precedent.
“If you don’t, you are going to create a culture in this country where people abduct themselves so that they can gain sympathy and put the government in bad light,” he said.
He reiterated that the government will not tolerate attempts to tarnish its image through staged incidents.
“That behavior must come to an end, and we are going to take stern action against all those who pretend to have been abducted so that they can bring a bad name to the Republic of Kenya,” Murkomen asserted.
His remarks come amid ongoing public debate over Tuju’s claims, with authorities yet to release a comprehensive report on the incident.
