MP Joseph Tonui Seeks Government Action On Delayed Operationalization Of Kuresoi South Administrative Units

The Honourable Member of Parliament for Kuresoi South, Hon. Joseph Tonui, has called on the government to provide clarity on the long-delayed operationalization of administrative units in his constituency.

During a session in the National Assembly, Hon. Tonui requested a formal statement outlining the status of key divisions and locations that were gazetted in 2017 but remain inactive.

Specifically, the MP sought updates on Tinet and Kiptagich Divisions, as well as Kiptagich, Sotiki, Baraget, and Kabongoi Locations, which were listed for establishment under Gazette Notice No. 5853 dated 21st July 2017.

In response, the Ministry of Interior and National Administration acknowledged that while the administrative units had indeed been gazetted under Section 14(1) and (3) of the National Government Coordination Act, 2013, most have yet to be operationalized due to funding constraints.

Tinet and Kiptagich Divisions remain inactive, while Sotiki and Kabongoi Locations were successfully operationalized in 2020. However, Baraget Location still awaits implementation.

“The Ministry has not yet received the necessary budgetary allocation to operationalize all the gazetted administrative units,” a representative stated.

“Once funds are appropriated, the Ministry is committed to proceeding with the full operationalization of the remaining units.”

To address this, the Ministry has reportedly initiated discussions with the National Treasury to secure the required funding.

Priority will be given to deploying personnel and infrastructure once resources become available, ensuring the affected areas can benefit from improved access to government services.

Hon. Tonui emphasized the need for swift action to strengthen government presence and enhance service delivery at the grassroots level, especially in underserved regions like Kuresoi South.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to this goal, contingent on the timely allocation of necessary funds.

The issue continues to highlight the broader challenge of implementing administrative reforms in Kenya amid competing budgetary priorities.
