Alex Mwakideu, Jalang’o and other celebrities face backlash for moderating Cyber Crime Bill Forum

Kenyan radio presenter Alex Mwakideu and several public figures, including Lang’ata MP Jalang’o, Y.Y Comedian, and Oga Obinna, have come under fire from netizens after participating in a public forum on the newly enacted Cyber Crime Bill.

According to reports, the group moderated a civic education session aimed at sensitising Kenyans on the provisions of the controversial law.

The event was held on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, at Panari Hotel in Nairobi.

Shortly after the forum, the Radio47 presenter shared photos from the event on his social media pages, showing him alongside fellow panelists and several local celebrities who attended the discussion.

“Thank you all for hearing our call to have this discussion. Haingewezekana bila nyinyi nyote, and all the people in the audience, ahsanteni sana,” he captioned the post.

However, the post quickly drew sharp criticism online.

Within an hour, social media users flooded his comment section, accusing the celebrities of being “sellouts” allegedly pushing the government’s agenda.

Many critics claimed the participants had been paid to promote the Cyber Crime Bill, a law that has sparked heated debate across the country over fears it could be used to suppress free speech and online expression.

Some angry fans even vowed to unfollow and stop supporting the entertainers involved in the campaign.

“Achieved totally nothing.”

“No sooner had Jalang’o entered Parliament than his tummy protruded.”

Kimnastix Kimz added:

“Alex, kuna watu hufai hata kuwaalika kwa mazungumzo kama haya. That MP once said Gen Z should die as long as life goes on. I willl never forget that.”

Joshua Dere posted:

“Everyone you invited supports this government, plus a few crooks paid to sanitise the bill. Then you tampered with the network so we couldn’t hear what they said.”

Despite the backlash, neither the revered radio personality nor the other panelists have issued a public response to the criticism.
