Ali Kiba blames stylist for ‘Sweater ya Nyanya’ scandal: “Sikujua”

Tanzanian superstar Ali Kiba has finally broken his silence over the viral photos of him wearing a multi-coloured “sweater ya nyanya,” a fashion piece many Kenyans hilariously associate with grandmothers.

Speaking to Kenyan journalists ahead of his much-anticipated concert, the Mahaba hitmaker clarified that he had no idea the vintage sweater carried such an image, at least not until fans began clowning him online.

According to Kiba, the now-infamous outfit was a last-minute surprise from his stylist, who brought it to the set just moments before filming began.

“Sweater ya nyanya haitokuwa kesho,” Kiba assured, responding to a journalist who asked whether he would wear it on stage.

“Honestly, I was shocked when the designer brought that sweater. He gave me a white shirt and yellow trousers, then suddenly appeared with that sweater. I didn’t want to wear it and even questioned him, but we were already on set, so I just went with it. I didn’t know it’s something associated with old women,” he added.

The singer stated that he has since learned his lesson and won’t be making such a wardrobe mistake again.

This clarification comes nearly two months after Kiba trended online, following the release of behind-the-scenes photos from the video shoot.

The colourful sweater drew mixed reactions, with many fans poking fun at the Bongo Flava king, while others questioned his sense of style, and, in some online corners, even his masculinity.

Despite the backlash, Kiba seems to be taking it all in stride, laughing off the fashion faux pas as a “misunderstanding” between him and his stylist.
