Embakasi East Member of Parliament (MP) Babu Owino has joined a growing chorus of politicians and concerned Kenyans criticizing the National Police Service (NPS) following the alleged abduction of individuals who criticized President William Ruto on social media.
In a statement issued on Thursday, December 26, Owino accused Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, of insulting the intelligence of Kenyans by denying that the police were involved in the abductions.
“The statement issued today by IG Kanja is a direct insult to the intelligence and dignity of Kenyans,” Owino stated.
“It is a careless attempt to downplay a crisis that has left families devastated, communities in fear, and the entire nation outraged.”
Owino strongly rejected Kanja’s attempts to absolve the police from responsibility, highlighting the anguish of the families of the abducted individuals.
“How dare he shift the blame to the public when Kenyans have witnessed police brutality, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings?
As mothers, fathers, and children search for their loved ones, the IG’s dismissive comments are a cruel mockery,” Owino said.
The MP also condemned IG Kanja’s leadership, pointing to a disturbing pattern of alleged abductions and human rights violations under his watch.
He called for Kanja’s resignation to allow for credible investigations and to restore public confidence in the National Police Service.
“I demand his immediate resignation to ensure proper investigations are conducted and that public trust in the police is restored,” Owino declared.
Owino also criticized the government for its silence on the matter, urging them to take responsibility and push for the IG’s resignation.
“If the IG does not resign, I will mobilize all available legal means, including a parliamentary censure motion, to hold him and the police accountable,” he said.
Finally, Owino expressed his solidarity with the families of the abducted individuals, vowing to continue the fight for their release.
“I will not stop until those who have been abducted are brought home,” he promised.
In the past week, reports have emerged of at least four young Kenyans being abducted for sharing AI-generated images critical of the President, as well as another individual detained for creating cartoons of prominent political figures.
