Babu Owino shares new photos to prove his Nyanza roots after being trolled for posting old images

Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has moved to set the record straight about his origin, affirming that he hails from Nyanza region, following online claims questioning his Luo roots.

On Monday, October 20, 2025, the outspoken legislator shared a photo of himself seated outside his rural home while holding two books.

In the post, he revealed that he had retreated to his Got Matar village home in Siaya County for some quiet reflection, just a day after attending the burial of ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

“Having a me time in the Village, Got Matar to reflect on my life and the lives of my People,” he wrote.

Netizens Maul Babu Owino Over Old Photo

However, online sleuths, famously known as the Kenyan Online DCI battalion, were quick to notice that the image he initially shared was not new.

Many netizens pointed out that the same photo had appeared on his social media pages back in December 2020, when he had asked his followers which of the two books he should read first.

After being called out for recycling an old picture, the MP responded swiftly by uploading fresh photos taken at his Siaya home.

A True Son Of Nyanza

The latest images, which appeared to have been captured recently, were accompanied by a caption that subtly mocked his critics while reaffirming his connection to Nyanza.

“East or West this is Home. Got Matar, Yimbo.
Yimbo East Location,
Pala Sub-location,
Kachwiji Clan,” Babu later wrote in a follow-up post.

The gesture drew widespread praise from his supporters, who commended him for directly confronting those questioning his heritage.

This online exchange comes at a time when Babu is reportedly facing opposition from a section of ODM leaders who claim he cannot be appointed party leader following Raila Odinga’s death, arguing that he is not a “true Luo” from Nyanza.

The allegations emerged after a growing number of Kenyans publicly endorsed Babu for both the ODM leadership and a possible Nairobi gubernatorial bid in 2027.
