Amid growing concerns over corruption, abductions, and political instability, the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) has called on the government to address a series of urgent national issues.
In a press briefing on November 14, 2024, KCCB chairperson Maurice Muhatia outlined five immediate demands for President William Ruto and his administration.
The bishops expressed deep concerns about the escalating corruption, political divisions, and human rights violations in the country.
“We feel compelled to voice our grave concerns regarding the troubling political climate that has gripped our nation,” Muhatia said.
He added that despite numerous appeals, the government has shown little response, leaving citizens increasingly anxious and distrustful.
1. Political Divisions and Tensions
The bishops condemned the growing political rifts within the government, which they believe are fueling divisions and undermining national unity.
They noted that the internal conflicts have created an atmosphere of mistrust, both among citizens and within the government itself.
2. Corruption and Mismanagement
The second demand focused on the widespread corruption within the government.
Muhatia criticized elected leaders for allowing themselves to be compromised by corrupt deals, emphasizing that corruption is not only about financial gain but also the abuse of power and position.
“The massive greed we are witnessing is both shocking and heartbreaking,” he lamented.
3. Human Rights Violations and Abductions
The bishops also raised alarm over the rising incidents of abductions, disappearances, torture, and killings, which they believe have become recurring problems.
They highlighted the ongoing trauma faced by families who lost loved ones during the anti-government protests in June 2024, particularly the violent crackdown on the Gen Z demonstrations.
The KCCB questioned who is responsible for these abductions and whether the government is failing to protect its citizens as mandated by the Constitution.
4. Violence Against Women
In addition to the general human rights concerns, the bishops expressed outrage over the increasing violence against women, including murder and abuse.
These acts, they said, have sparked widespread anger and disgust among Kenyans, demanding urgent action from authorities to ensure women’s safety.
5. Culture of Lies and Unfulfilled Promises
The bishops also criticized the government’s culture of dishonesty and the failure to deliver on promises made to the people.
They condemned the growing tendency for politicians to distort the truth, noting that “it seems truth only exists in what the government says.”
The bishops urged Kenyans to reject the lies and demand accountability from their leaders.
Furthermore, they expressed concern over unfulfilled promises, especially in areas like healthcare and job creation, which are contributing to the rising unemployment and underdevelopment in the country.
In closing, the KCCB stressed the need for the government to prioritize the well-being of all Kenyans, uphold the Constitution, and address the growing discontent among the populace.
They urged President Ruto to act swiftly on these issues to restore trust and stability in the country.
