Court orders TikTok couple to marry within 60 days over ‘explicit’ videos

A Nigerian court has ordered two popular TikTok content creators to get married within 60 days after they were accused of sharing what authorities described as indecent videos on social media.

The ruling was issued by Magistrate Halima Wali of a Kano State Magistrate Court on Monday, October 20, 2025, targeting the viral TikTok pair Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda.

According to court documents, the TikTok couple were found to have engaged in multiple public displays of affection in their skits, which authorities and several members of the public deemed immoral and contrary to the region’s cultural and religious values.

Court Directs Kano Hisbah Board to Facilitate the Marriage

In her judgment, Magistrate Wali directed the Kano State Hisbah Board, the Islamic morality enforcement agency, to oversee and facilitate the couple’s marriage process within 60 days.

She further warned that failure to comply with the order would amount to contempt of court, attracting unspecified penalties.

“The actions of the accused persons have violated the moral standards upheld by this community,” the court observed.

The court noted that the decision was made to “restore public decency and prevent moral corruption.”

Content Deemed ‘Immoral’ by Nigerian Authorities

The decision follows weeks of public debate after Mai Wushirya and Yar Guda posted several romantic videos that went viral on TikTok and other social media platforms.

The Nigerian Censorship Board and Hisbah officials argued that the clips breached Kano State’s censorship laws, which strictly prohibit the creation and sharing of sexually suggestive or explicit material.

“Such behaviour undermines the values we stand for and sets a dangerous example for the youth,” one Hisbah Board official told journalists after the ruling.

Public Reactions and Ongoing Debate Over The TikTok Couple

The court’s directive has since sparked widespread debate both online and offline.

While some Kano residents and conservative groups praised the ruling as a moral corrective measure consistent with Islamic teachings, others criticised it as a violation of personal freedom and a dangerous precedent for creative expression in Nigeria.

The case comes just weeks after the two content creators were arraigned for allegedly producing and circulating obscene material online.

Mai Wushirya was earlier remanded in a correctional facility, while Yar Guda was questioned by the Hisbah Board’s enforcement unit before the matter was brought to court.

As of the time of filing this report, neither Mai Wushirya nor Yar Guda has publicly commented on the court order or indicated whether they intend to appeal the decision.
