Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commended KANU Chairman Gideon Moi for his decision to withdraw from the upcoming Baringo Senatorial by-election, calling it a wise and mature move that demonstrates statesmanship and foresight.
Speaking to the media on Thursday, CS Murkomen said Moi’s withdrawal not only eases local political tensions but also opens up space for younger leaders like UDA’s candidate Vincent Chemitei to step up and lead.
“Gideon Moi and Chemitei have a close relationship almost like that of a father and son. It would have been unfortunate for them to engage in political battles,” said Murkomen. “There comes a stage in politics where, with age and experience, you step back and allow the younger generation to take over while you focus on national unity and leadership.”
Murkomen further revealed that Moi’s decision followed a meeting with President William Ruto at State House, Nairobi, where the two leaders reportedly held candid discussions on matters concerning national unity and the upcoming by-election.
“The fact that Gideon Moi, President Ruto, and other leaders sat down shows wisdom. Sometimes, unity is more important than competition,” said Murkomen, adding that even leaders like Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta have embraced the idea of a broad-based government, and Moi is welcome to be part of that vision.
The CS used the moment to highlight growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election, stating that more leaders are gravitating toward President Ruto’s administration a sign, he said, of confidence in the president’s leadership.
“Contrary to earlier claims that this would be a one-term presidency, more friends and even previous critics are coming on board,” said Murkomen. “This shows that 2027 will be a different story, and the momentum is clearly building behind President Ruto.”
Murkomen argued that supporting Ruto for a second term would give the president time to complete his key legacy projects, including the affordable housing program, road and transport infrastructure, enhanced security in bandit-prone areas, agricultural reforms, and the rollout of universal healthcare.
“By 2032, if we remain focused, Kenya will be on solid ground toward becoming a first-world country,” he said.
Murkomen emphasized that after Ruto completes his second term, the path will be open for new leaders to step forward in 2032, avoiding unnecessary succession battles and promoting a peaceful transition.
“Let the president finish his term, and then others can try in future. This way, we build a stronger, more united country,” he concluded.
The Baringo Senatorial by-election is scheduled for November 27, 2025. UDA will now proceed with Vincent Chemitei as its flagbearer, following Moi’s exit from the race.
