Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel Dies After Road Accident

Former Laikipia North Member of Parliament Mathew Lempurkel has died from injuries sustained in a road accident that occurred earlier this week in Rongai, Kajiado County.

The accident, which took place six days ago, left Lempurkel with critical injuries.

He was rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and placed under close medical supervision.

Despite efforts by medical professionals to stabilize his condition, Lempurkel succumbed to his injuries on Sunday, August 24.

Lempurkel was a prominent political figure, best known for representing Laikipia North in the National Assembly from 2013 to 2017 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party.

During his tenure, he was vocal on issues affecting pastoralist communities, including land rights, resource-based conflicts, and marginalization.

After losing his parliamentary seat in the 2017 general election, Lempurkel remained active in regional politics and community advocacy.

He was also known for his firm stance on Maasai community interests and was involved in various initiatives aimed at promoting peace and cohesion in northern Kenya.

His political career was not without controversy. In 2021, he was sentenced to 12 months in prison without the option of a fine after being found guilty of assaulting a fellow politician, current Laikipia North MP Sarah Korere, in 2016.

The incident drew national attention and highlighted tensions in the region’s political landscape.

Condolences have begun to pour in from leaders across the country, with many describing Lempurkel as a passionate advocate for his constituents and a leader who was never afraid to speak his mind.
