The Kenya Meteorological Department Friday issued a heavy rainfall advisory warning of intensified downpours across several parts of the country from Friday, October 3, to Sunday, October 5, 2025.
The department said rainfall over the Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, and the Highlands west of the Rift Valley is expected to exceed 20mm within 24 hours and spread eastwards to the Highlands and Nairobi.
The rains are likely to be accompanied by strong southerly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.9 m/s).
According to the advisory, the heavy rains are expected to persist through the weekend before reducing in intensity from Monday, October 6, 2025.
“The strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damage. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” the advisory read.
Counties expected to be affected include Kisumu, Homabay, Siaya, Migori, Busia, Kisii, Nyamira, Nandi, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Baringo, Nakuru, Trans-Nzoia, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, West Pokot, Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, Tharaka-Nithi, and Nairobi.
Residents in these areas have been urged to remain on high alert for potential flooding, which may occur even in areas that have not experienced heavy local rainfall due to downstream water flow.
The department further cautioned against driving or walking in moving water, sheltering under trees, and staying near grilled windows to reduce risks from flooding and lightning strikes.
