Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua took to social media on Wednesday, November 20, to accuse security agents of intimidating and surveilling him.
This comes weeks after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dismissed claims that state agents were monitoring the country’s second Deputy President under the 2010 Constitution.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Gachagua revealed that he had been followed by security personnel in unmarked vehicles.
“Security agents in unmarked cars have been following me wherever I go.
They are parking at the entrance of my Nairobi residence, noting all my visitors, and trailing me whenever I leave, even following me all the way to my rural home in Nyeri,” part of the post read.
Gachagua further shared an incident from Sunday, November 17, when he noticed a saloon car parked outside his house.
According to him, the car had followed him to multiple locations, including the PCEA Kerarapon Church and a late lunch, before returning to his residence.
Upon checking the car’s number plate, he discovered that it was registered as a lorry, which he said reinforced his suspicions of unauthorized surveillance.
The former Deputy President, who was ousted from office in a swift impeachment just over a month ago,
compared the alleged intimidation to the oppressive tactics used during former President Daniel arap Moi’s regime.
“This surveillance and intimidation of Kenyans was last witnessed during the era of the dreaded ‘Special Branch’ during the 24 years of Moi’s misrule!” he remarked.
Given the rising cases of extrajudicial killings and abductions in the country, Gachagua expressed his concern that sharing his experience might be crucial should anything happen to him.
“In this era of extrajudicial killings, forced abductions, and disappearances by state agents,
I find it necessary to share the harassment I’m undergoing and to inform Kenyans to hold the state responsible if I am harmed,” he stated.
Gachagua also called on the government to leave him alone.
“You hounded me out of office, and now you should allow me to enjoy my peace as a private citizen,” he added.
Since his impeachment, Gachagua has made several serious accusations against the government he once served, often criticizing his former boss in public speeches across the country.
This marks the second time Gachagua has spoken out about his life being in danger.
On October 20, he revealed that he had been the target of two separate poisoning attempts in Nyeri and Kisumu.
In a public address following his discharge from the hospital after being ill during the impeachment process, Gachagua claimed he felt his life was at risk, especially after his security had been temporarily withdrawn.
Following these accusations, the DCI summoned him to record a statement due to the serious nature of his claims against President William Ruto’s administration.
However, Gachagua did not respond to the summons and instead attended a court session at Milimani Law Courts to challenge his impeachment.
