Kenya elected vice chair of key ITU advisory group at WTDC 2025

Kenya strengthened its standing in the global ICT arena after being elected Vice Chairperson of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Telecommunication Development Advisory Group (TDAG).

The election took place during the ongoing World Telecommunication Development Conference (WTDC) 2025 in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Fred Ong’aro, Deputy Director for Fund Strategy Coordination at the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA), was chosen to represent the African region in the influential advisory body.

TDAG plays a central role within the ITU-D sector, guiding global digital development priorities and advising on programmes and policies that foster inclusive connectivity.

This marks the second time Kenya has held the Vice Chair position, a development that places the country in a strategic position to influence global digital policy, strengthen its international visibility, and deepen access to global best practices.

The role is expected to bolster Kenya’s resource-mobilization efforts and reinforce its leadership in ICT development across the continent.

WTDC, held every four years, convenes governments, regulators, industry leaders, and development partners to set global priorities for ICT advancement.

The 2025 conference focuses on digital transformation, expanding connectivity, building capacity, and narrowing the digital divide — particularly in developing economies.

Information, Communications and the Digital Economy Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo and Broadcasting and Telecommunications Principal Secretary Stephen Isaboke are leading Kenya’s delegation at the conference.

Their participation underscores the country’s commitment to shaping global ICT agendas, strengthening strategic partnerships, and advocating for increased support to accelerate digital inclusion.

Through high-level engagements in Baku, the Kenyan delegation reaffirmed the nation’s readiness to collaborate with the ITU and its member states in advancing programmes that promote connectivity, innovation, and sustainable technological growth.

Kenya’s contributions at WTDC continue to emphasize the needs and priorities of developing countries in global ICT policy discussions.
