Kenyan-American Huldah Momanyi Hiltsley has made a significant milestone by winning a seat in the Minnesota House of Representatives, thus becoming the first Kenyan-born individual to serve in a political office in the United States.
Competing as a candidate for the Democratic–Farmer–Labor (DFL) Party, she achieved victory with 64.78% of the votes, representing Minnesota’s District 38A, which encompasses the southwestern regions of Brooklyn Park and Osseo.
District 38A is characterized by its remarkable diversity, with approximately 66% of its residents identifying as people of color, a substantial number of whom are African immigrants.
Hiltsley, an alumna of Bethel University, attributes her foray into politics to her dedication to enhancing her community and advocating for their interests within the legislative framework.
Her objectives include tackling critical issues that impact her constituents, with a particular emphasis on affordable housing, equitable access to education and healthcare, and the creation of economic opportunities that cater to the diverse demographic she represents.
