Polly Irungu, a Kenyan-born photographer who previously served in the Biden-Harris Administration, has landed a new role in the U.S. state of Maryland.
On Thursday, May 1, Irungu announced she had joined the Executive Office of the Governor of Maryland as a photographer for Governor Wes Moore.
“I’m excited to share that I’ve joined Maryland’s Executive Office of the Governor as a Photographer for Governor Wes Moore! It is an incredible honour to continue my journey in public service,” Irungu shared in a statement.
Polly received a wave of congratulatory messages from Kenyans and colleagues worldwide.
Notable figures such as NTV News reporter Brygettes Ngana and life coach Antony Alexanderia Irungu extended their best wishes.

Communication strategist Michael Kitum and Rini Sampath of ANALYGENCE praised her talent and work ethic.
Nathalie Gordon also expressed excitement, highlighting the strong team Polly will join.
Irungu is based in Washington, D.C., and is known not only for her photography but also as the founder of Black Women Photographers (BWP), a platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of Black and African women in visual storytelling.
Since its launch in 2020, BWP has grown into a global community with over 2,100 members across more than 60 countries.
The initiative has disbursed over $185,000 in grants and $60,000 in photography equipment.
Before joining the Maryland Governor’s Office, Polly served as Official Photo Editor to Vice President Kamala Harris and worked at the White House from July 2022 to January 2025.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Oregon and is widely respected as a speaker and advocate for equity in the creative industries.
Irungu continues to inspire and uplift the next generation of photographers.
