A man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Kisumu court after being found guilty of robbery with violence.
Michael Onyango Ochieng, commonly known as “Jonyo,” was convicted for assaulting and robbing John Okaka on May 11, 2024, in the Manyatta area of Kisumu.
According to court documents, Okaka was attacked around 7 a.m. by three men armed with a crowbar. He was struck on the head, and the attackers stole two mobile phones and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said that multiple witnesses including neighbors, medical personnel, and investigating officers testified and presented evidence linking Ochieng to the crime.
Some witnesses identified him by name, describing him as a known individual in the neighborhood.
“The victim, who sustained head injuries, also identified Ochieng as one of the attackers,” the ODPP said in a statement.
Medical evidence confirmed that Okaka suffered injuries consistent with blunt force trauma. Additionally, a police identification parade further placed Ochieng at the scene.
Although Ochieng denied the charges and claimed he was arrested at a kiosk unrelated to the incident, the court ruled that the prosecution, led by Raymond Nyonges, had proven the case beyond reasonable doubt.
While delivering the verdict, Principal Magistrate Dennis Ogal of the Winam Law Courts said the evidence clearly showed Ochieng was among those who assaulted and robbed the victim.
