Kostya Tszyu made history as the only Soviet fighter to win a gold medal at the 1991 World Championships in Sydney. His performance drew immediate attention from Australian promoters, prompting him to sign with promoter Bill Mordey and trainer Johnny Lewis. By the end of his amateur career, he had a record of 270 bouts with 259 victories and no stoppage defeats. 

He transitioned into a professional in 1992. Soon after, he defeated the former world champion Juan Laporte. In 1993, he defeated opponents such as, Steve Larrimore, Larry La Crousiere and Robert Rivera.

The following year, he came out victorious over Héctor López, Angel Hernandez and Pedro “Chinito” Sanchez. In addition to this, he ascended to theNo.1 ranking in the light welterweight division.

His first world championship was in 1995 when he defeated IBF light-welterweight champion Jake Rodríguez in Las Vegas. He went on to defend the title against high-profile opponents including Roger Mayweather, Hugo Pineda, Cory Johnson and Jan Bergman.

He later suffered his first career defeat to Vince Phillips. Remarkably, he knocked out former champions Calvin Grove and Rafael Ruelas. He regained world championship status in 1999 after wins over Diosbelys Hurtado and former world champion Miguel Ángel González.

He added further victories over Ahmed Santos and the legendary Julio César Chávez.

In 2001, he won the WBA title from Sharmba Mitchell and defeated Oktay Urkal. That same year, he recaptured the IBF belt with a second-round knockout of Zab Judah, a bout that made him the first fighter in 30 years to unify all major titles at 140 pounds.

He followed this with a unanimous decision win over top contender Ben Tackie and a knockout victory over Jesse James Leija in Melbourne.

In 2004, he defeated Sharmba Mitchell again, this time winning by third round knockout. The performance earned him Ring Magazine’s Comeback Fighter of the Year award.

His final world title bout came in 2005 against Britain’s Ricky Hatton, where he lost after retiring on his stool following the 11th round. 

Finally, he stated that he would only consider returning to boxing for marquee matchups against stars like Shane Mosley, Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr.
