A police officer stationed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi was robbed after his G3, loaded with 20 rounds of ammunition after steeping out of his workplace on the morning of Tuesday, November 12.
The officer a constable, was on duty with a collogue manning the landing zone when the incident occurred.
Both officers were armed at the time, but the victim reportedly left the work area and walked outside the compound where he was attacked and stripped of his weapon.
Following the robbery the constable reported the loss of the firearm prompting a police operation to recover it.
However, efforts to trace the weapon were unsuccessful.
The officer who is not known to drink alcohol was arrested to assist investigators in understanding the circumstances surrounding the theft.
Authorities are concerned that the stolen rifle could be used in other crimes within Nairobi or elsewhere.
Investigators believe the incident may been planned in advance as the officer was in fully uniform at the time of the robbery.
Senior police officials visited the scene to assess the situation after the report was filled.
This robbery comes just days after another attack on a police officer in Samburu County, Where a police constable was shot and injured before being robbed of his firearm.
The officer had been part of a team intercepting a truck suspected of transporting stolen cattle from Moyale to Nairobi.
The officers came under attack in the Mlima Tatu area on the evening of Saturday, November 9.
During a fierce gun battle one officer was shot in the thigh and his G3 rifle, loaded with 60 rounds was stollen by the bandits who was made off with 21 stolen cows.
Police are increasingly worried about the rising number of firearms falling into criminal hands which poses a serious threat to security.
