President Ruto Meets Over 10,000 Teachers At State House

President William Ruto on Thursday met with more than 10,000 teachers at State House, Nairobi, where he reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening the education sector as a foundation for national transformation.

Addressing the gathering, President Ruto described teachers as Kenya’s “greatest resource and true patriots,” acknowledging their vital role in shaping the future of the country.

“Teachers spend extra hours shaping the destiny of our children. We are indebted to these heroes,” said the President.

He noted that over the past three years, the government has significantly increased the education budget from Sh540 billion to Sh702 billion the largest investment in the sector in the country’s history.

On curriculum reforms, President Ruto said the government had responded to concerns surrounding the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) by ensuring a clearer, smoother transition.

He also announced that 76,000 new teachers have been hired under his administration, with plans to increase that number to 100,000 by January 2026 to improve the teacher-to-student ratio.

Other key milestones highlighted include the construction of 23,000 new classrooms across the country, the establishment of the Open University of Kenya, and the rollout of a student-centred higher education funding model designed to both support learners and boost financing for universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.

In addition to education reforms, President Ruto assured teachers that they would benefit from the Affordable Housing Programme.

He announced that 20 percent of the units in the programme will be allocated specifically to teachers, underscoring the government’s broader commitment to improving the welfare of educators.
