Russia launched a drone strike on Kyiv, Ukraine’s capital, marking a deadly start to the New Year.
The attack killed two people, injured at least six others, and caused significant damage to buildings in two districts, local authorities reported.
Explosions echoed across the sky as Ukraine’s air force issued warnings about incoming drones.
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed that air defenses were actively working to intercept the attack. Despite these efforts, two floors of a residential building in central Kyiv were severely damaged.
The State Emergency Service confirmed that two individuals were killed in the strike.
Rescue operations were launched immediately, with photos showing firefighters working to control fires and helping elderly residents from the building.
Nearby, debris from a downed drone damaged one of the National Bank of Ukraine’s buildings, while another non-residential structure was also affected by the wreckage.
In a social media post, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, stating, “Even on New Year’s Eve, Russia was only concerned about how to hurt Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian military reported that it successfully shot down 63 out of 111 drones launched by Russia overnight, while another 46 drones were disabled through electronic jamming.
Despite these efforts, Russia continues its relentless aerial bombardment across Ukraine, targeting both front-line and civilian areas.
This strike follows another overnight missile assault on Kyiv and the Sumy region on Tuesday, during which 21 missiles caused damage to buildings and infrastructure.
On the southern front, Russian shelling in the city of Kherson killed a 23-year-old volunteer worker, marking another tragic loss on the front lines of the conflict.
