William Ruto delivers Sh 2 million pledge ahead of Majembe vs Mbavu Destroyer’s boxing match

President William Ruto has honoured his much-talked-about pledge of Sh 2 million ahead of the highly anticipated boxing match between viral sensations Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer, delivering on his promise just two days after making it.

The bout, scheduled for April 4, 2026 and trending across social media platforms has captured the imagination of many Kenyans, turning a once casual online rivalry into one of the country’s most talked-about sporting spectacles.

The cash support was confirmed on the evening of Monday, February 9, when Oga Obinna, the media personality organising the fight, posted on Instagram a video of himself receiving the funds from Lang’ata MP Phelix “Jalang’o” Odiwuor, who served as the conduit between State House and the fighters.

The post was sighted by Nairobi News and duly publicised.

In the video, Obinna is seen acknowledging the money, followed by a caption confirming receipt of the funds from Ruto.

In his caption, Obinna wrote:

“Pesa imefika. 🙏🏿🙏🏿👌🏿👌🏿👌🏿🔥🔥🔥🔥 asante Prez Ruto Asante Jalas #majembevsmbavudestroyer @jalangoo.”

President William Ruto had first aired his commitment on Sunday, February 8, during a visit from Jalang’o to the State House in Nairobi.

In a light-hearted clip that quickly went viral, Jalang’o updated the Head of State on the upcoming fight, using Mbavu Destroyer’s signature phrase “weka mawe” to set the tone of the discussion.

Amused and supportive, Ruto pledged Sh 1 million each to Majembe and Mbavu Destroyer, totalling Sh 2 million, and also promised to buy 2,000 tickets for fans attending the event.

The president’s gesture was seen as an unexpected but welcome endorsement of grassroots talent and the growing influence of social media-driven sporting culture in Kenya.

What began as playful banter between two fighters on digital platforms has swiftly become a national talking point, with personalities, influencers and fans rallying behind their favourite pugilists.

Organised by Oga Obinna, the Majembe vs Mbavu Destroyer fight carries a Sh 1 million prize for the winner, a sum that has only driven more excitement as the date draws closer.

Analysts say the bout represents more than just a boxing match: it showcases how social media trends can elevate amateur sport, spotlight emerging talent, and bring communities together behind an event that’s part entertainment, part competition.
